Trestleboard, November 2018
Mountain City Lodge No. 67 - Lexington, Virginia
From the East

Brethren,

The year is almost gone and I can’t believe how quickly it went. As we look forward to our election and installation of new officers in December, Mountain City Lodge can be assured of a stable line of incoming officers – all things being equal – for the next several years. Our new officers have worked very had to become proficient in ritual, and I hope we can all be patient as they step up into their new roles. As most of us know, it’s very different thing learning the ritual and then getting it right on the night. Please be patient with them as they switch from the learning mode into the real thing.

As I’ve continued to travel to our various events out of town, it’s always very interesting speaking to Brethren from other states and even other countries and hearing about differences in ritual and how different Grand Lodges work. We can be nothing proud of our Masonic Heritage in Virginia and ask that we all strive to be be “better men” to honor this great Fraternity.

Fraternally, as always…

John Morman

The Badge of a Mason
My brothers the lambskin or white leather apron was presented to all of us when we were raised to Master Mason.   It is yours to wear throughout an honorable life and, at your death, to be placed upon the coffin that shall contain your mortal remains, and be with them laid in that final resting place.  Let its pure and spotless surface be to you an ever-present reminder of a purity of life and rectitude of conduct, a never-ending inspiration for nobler deeds, for higher thoughts, for greater achievements. and when at last your weary feet shall  come to the end of life's toilsome journey, may the record of your life and actions be as pure and spotless as this fair emblem.

There can be no doubt that the Masonic apron  has been developed from the apron worn by operative masons in the middle ages.  The few examples surviving show that the operative apron was fashioned from the skin of an animal , most probably a sheep .It was large enough to cover the wearer from chest to ankles, and its fall was held by a leathern thong which passed round the neck.  From each side a thong, firmly stitched, enabled the mason to tie the apron round his waist, and the tied bow tended to fall as end-strings.  The use of this rough apron continued for many centuries , the woven apron used by modern masons is comparatively late.  It came into use in the eighteenth century.

The earliest representations of the Freemason's Apron are seen on the engraved portrait of Antony Sayer, the first G.M. of the modern Craft. (1717), and on the frontispiece illustration  of Anderson's first Book  of Constitutions (1723).
