Trestleboard, December 2018
Mountain City Lodge No. 67 - Lexington, Virginia
From the East

Brethren,

As we reach the end of another year, it becomes too easy to ask “Where does the time go?”. I looked forward with great anticipation to my year as Master. To follow in the steps of my own father and grandfather on my own Masonic journey has been a true joy. I also looked forward to the things we, as a Lodge, could achieve together. Several of these objectives have been reached–the repairs to the stairwell and hallway plaster and paintwork, the clearing of the accumulated “historic” materials, the upgrade of the phone system to wireless/cellular operation and more. A latecomer to the party is the replacement of the stairlift chair. With the efforts of the Trustees and the consent of the Brethren, these jobs have been taken care of. Greater public awareness by means of our participation and sponsorship of the July 4th Bike Parade, and Candlelight processional and of course our High School scholarships. We are raising our public profile with all of these efforts. We have initiated a healthy number of new Masons, and with the efforts of W Brent we have them coming along in various stages of their own Masonic journeys. Particular praise to RW Scott Cassell, SW Brent, and RW Joe Boatwright for working so hard to develop a proficiency program for these new Masons. Thanks too to RW Robert Agnor and RW Joe for their unceasing efforts to train us in the proper use of Ritual, particularly in the case of our newer Masons who have taken up offices and worked so hard to become proficient.

Health issues interfered with much of my participation during the year, and has left me both extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished while still feeling a sense of personal disappointment. Above all else, however, the Lodge has stood firm and shown what it means to be a true Fraternity.

If we give WM Elect Brent as much support as I have been so fortunate to enjoy, I know that he will have a great year and that we will continue to grow in the community.

Finally, I want to express my thanks and appreciation, and I’m sure those of the previous Worshipful Masters, to RW Warren for all he has done in serving as Secretary for 12 years. He has been a stalwart in a process which, of necessity, produces constant change.

It has been a true privilege serving you as Worshipful Master for 2018, and I will be forever grateful for your support, compassion and understanding.

Fraternally,

John Morman
Worshipful Master 2018

The Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of  America and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
---

In 1892, the flag inspired James B. Upham and Francis Belliamy to write the Pledge of Allegiance. The original words were: I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
In the 1920's, "my Flag" was changed to "the Flag of the United States of America."
In 1942, the Pledge received official recognition by Congress and was included in the U.S. Flag Code.
In 1954, Congress added the phrase "under God."
Christmas Party &
Officer Installation
The brethren, family, and friends of Mountain City Lodge No. 67 (Lexington) gathered on Friday, December 8, 2018, at Moody Hall on post at VMI to celebrate Christmas and install our 2019 officers. Worshipful Brent Fellows was installed as Master, Worshipful John Morman was recognized for an outstanding year, and R.W. Warren Schmid received a Certificate of Merit from the Grand Lodge of Virginia A.F. & A.M., presented by M.W. Kerry Campbell, past Grand Master of Masons in Virginia. The wonderful Jean Glisson read our annual Christmas Story, and a good time was had by all. A very warm thank you to all the spouses and families who support our Masons all year long and for all you do. More photos can be viewed on Mountain City Masonic Lodge's Facebook page.
